Set B7 - Freshwater Fish - card information

26. Brook Trout
(Salvelinus fontinalis)

26. Brook Trout

This American species was introduced years ago in many British waters, but has not prospered. It is really a Char and not a Trout, and can be recognised at once by the peculiar mottled or marbled coloration of its back and sides; the tail is usually barred with blackish streaks, unlike the Trout or British Char. There are no British angling records, but in Britain it seldom weighs more than a pound. It grows much larger in America, where it is called Speckled Trout.
