Set B7 - Freshwater Fish - card information

18. Spiny Loach
(Cobitis taenia)

18. Spiny Loach

It has a very local distribution, and is mostly found in small clear rivers in Central England. The body is usually under three inches in length, rather elongated, pale brown with dark blotches in a regular row on its sides. There are six barbels of equal length around the mouth, and a small movable double-pointed spine on the snout just below the eyes. Both Loaches can easily be distinguished from other similar small fishes by the six barbels round the mouth and the rounded tail with a single fluke.
