38. The Greater Horseshoe Bat
(Rhinolophus ferrum-equinum)

38. The Greater Horseshoe Bat

This strange-looking, most remarkable bat, with its horseshoe-like appendage on its nose, shares with the Noctule the distinction of being one of our bigger members of the order Chiroptera, it having a wing-span of thirteen to fourteen inches. It loves rocky recesses and may be found quite numerously in many of the caverns of south-west England, where it seems to enjoy the damp atmosphere and equable temperature.
