Set B5 - British Wild Life - card information

20. The Red Squirrel
(Sciurus vulgaris)

20. The Red Squirrel

Formerly a common inhabitant of the woods of Britain, the red squirrel has lately been displaced in wide areas by the grey squirrel. However, it is still found in many woods and is widespread in Continental forests. The British red squirrel differs slightly from that across the Channel, for example its fur is more liable to fade and its tail becomes very bleached in summer, so it has been given subspecific rank and the lengthy name of S. vulgaris leucourus. But by whatever title it may be known, a red squirrel is one of the most graceful and beautiful of animals.
