The rise and fall of the sea is produced by the attraction of the Sun and Moon. The Moon is the principal factor. High water to high water is about 12 hours 25 minutes. The greatest or 'Spring' tides occur when Sun and Moon act together at New Moon or when the Earth is immediately between them at Full Moon. The smallest or 'Neap' tides occur when the Sun, Moon and Earth form a right angle. This is at Half Moon, when the Moon's pull acts against the Sun's, and causes tides then to be at minimum.
