At
midsummer, when in full bloom, the mallow is a handsome and showy
plant, common by the roadsides in the south of England. The leaves
at the base are almost round, with slight lobes. Those on the
stem are more distinctly lobed. The flowers are mauve with slightly
darker stripes, each having five separate petals, notched at the
tips. They average about an inch and a half across.
